Flashcards in Water Deck (12):
1

What type of molecule is water?

It's a polar molecule of 2 positive h+ ions and 1 negative o- ion

2

What else does hydrogen bond with?

Nitrogen and fluoride, both of which are 1-

3

What else does hydrogen bond with?

Nitrogen and fluoride, both of which are 1-

4

Strength/weakness of hydrogen bonds

Single hydrogen bonds are quite weak

Large numbers of hydrogen bonds are very strong

5

Definition of solvent

Liquid is the solvent

6

Definition of solute

The dissolving substrance is the solute

7

Definition of solution

The mixture of the solute and solvent

8

Water is a universal solvent

Ionic compounds disperse as ions in water
Water also enables the work of cytoplasm, and the suspension of plasma in blood

9

Cohesion

The same water molecules are attracted together
This is what creates water surface tension

10

Adhesion

2 opposite molecules attracted together
This is how water moves up the xylem in the plant

11

Specific heat capacity of water

It has a high specific heat capacity because a large amount of energy is needed to cause little change to the temperature e.g. this is why the sea only heats up in August

12

Water density

Less dense water is found at the top, more dense water is found at the bottom
