Flashcards in Waves Deck (31):
1

What is reflection?

The change in direction of a wave front at an interference between two different media

2

What is refraction?

The bending/changing of waves as they move from one medium to another

3

How do circular waves reflect when they hit a circular barrier?

Reflects back as straight waves

4

How do circular waves reflect when they hit a straight barrier?

Reflected as circular waves
EXTRA:
- the reflected waves look like they started an equal distance behind the barrier

5

How do straight waves reflect when they hit a straight barrier?

They reflect straight back

6

How do straight waves reflect when they hit a curved barrier?

Reflects back as circular wave

7

What are the laws of reflection?

1. The angle of incidence=the angle of reflection
2. The incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal all lie on the same plane

8

What is the speed of light?

3.0 x 10^8 m/s

9

What are three sources of light?

-sun
-fire
-lightbulb

10

How do we know light travels in a straight line?

Light doesn’t spread out

11

How do we see images?

Light is reflected off of the object and into the eye

12

What is the size of an image in a plane mirror?

Same size

13

What is the orientation/attitude of an image in the plane mirror?

Upright

14

What is the location of an image in a plane mirror?

Same distance behind as it is in front

15

What type of image is shown in a plane mirror?

Virtual

16

What is the size of an image in s convex mirror?

Smaller

17

What is the orientation/attitude of an image in a convex mirror?

Upright

18

What is the location of an image in a convex mirror?

Behind the mirror

19

What type of image is shown in a convex mirror?

Virtual

20

What is the size of an image on a concave mirror- inside the focal length?

Larger

21

What is the orientation/attitude of an image in a concave mirror-inside the focal length?

Upright

22

What is the location of an image in a concave mirror-inside the focal length?

Further away

23

What type of image is shown in a concave mirror-inside the focal length?

Virtual

24

What is the size of an image in a concave mirror-beyond the focal length?

Smaller

25

What is the orientation/attitude of an image in a concave mirror- beyond the focal length?

Inverted

26

What is the location of an image in a concave mirror- beyond the focal length?

Don’t know

27

What type of image is shown on a concave mirror- beyond the focal length?

Real

28

What type of lens is used to correct nearsightedness?

Diverging/Concave lens

29

What type of lens is used to correct farsightedness?

Converging/Convex lens

30

What happens when water waves travel at an angle into a slower medium?

- speed decreases
- wave length decreases
- amplitude decreases
- direction changes: waves bend left/behind

31

What happens when water waves travel at an angle into a faster medium?

- speed increases
- wave length increases
- amplitude increases
- direction changes: waves bend right/in front
