1

What is the definition of system?

An interrelated set of components, with an identifiable boundary, working together for some purpose.

Concept that compares the cyclical nature of families, organisations, processes, products, and systems with the cradle to grave life stages (birth, growth, maturity, decay, and death) of living organisms.

5

What is the definition of information system?

A collection of interrelated components that collect, process, store, and provie as output the information needed to complete business tasks.

6

What is the definition of SDLC?

System Development Life Cycle: the traditional methodology used to develop, maintain and replace information systems.

7

What is the definition of components?

Parts which make up the system. (Subsystems)

8

dependence on one or more subsystems.

9

What is the definition of a boundary?

Line that marks what is inside and what is outside the system.

10

What is the definition of purpose?

Overall goal or function of the system.

11

What is the definition of an environment?

Everything external to the system which interacts with the system.

12

What is the definition of interfaces?

Points where the system meets the environment or where subsystems meet each other.

13

What is the definition of input?

Things taken from the environment to fulfil a purpose.

14

What is the definition of output?

Things returned to an environment to fulfil a purpose.

15

What is the definition of constraints?

19

What is the definition of knowledge?

Understanding gained from information.

20

How are data, information and knowledge linked?

They are the three stages involved in turning facts into knowledge.

21

What are the five key components of an information system?

- hardware,
- software,
- data,
- processes and
- people.

22

What are the five main steps normally included in an SDLC?

- planning,
- analysis,
- design,
- implementation and
- support, security and maintenance.

23

What happens during a systems planning phase?

System requirements are studid and structured.

24

What happens during a systems analysis phase?

Total system information needs are identified, analysed, prioritised, and arranged.

25

What happens during a systems design phase?

Description of recommended solution is converted into logical and physical system specifications.

26

What happens during a systems logical design sub-phase?

All functional features of the results of the analysis phase are described independently of any specific computer platform.

27

What happens during a systems physical design sub-phase?

The logical design is turned into technology specific details for programming and system construction.

28

What happens during a systems implementation phase?

Information system is coded, tested, installed and supported in the organisation.

29

What happens during a systems maintenance phase?

Information system is systematically repaired and improved.

30

What are the eight steps involved in problem solving? (ordered)

- problem research,
- cost/benefit verification,
- requirement definition,
- possible solutions/alternatives,
- recommended solution,
- chosen solution definition,
- implementation and
- outcome verification and monitoring.

31

What is the role of mobile user?

Anyone wh's location is constantly changing but whos still requires access to information systems fro any location.

32

What is the roleof system user?

Anyone who will use or is affected by an information system on a regular basis.

33

What is the role of system analyst?

A technical specialist who studies the problems and needs of an organisation to determine how people data, processes and information technology can best accomplish improvements for the business.

34

What is the role of system designer?

Responsible for designing the computer database, inputs, outputs, screens, networks, and software that will meet th system users' requirements.

35

What is the role of system owner?

Information systems sponsor, usually responsible for funding project development.

36

What is the role of system builder?

Technical specialist who constructs information systems and components based on the design specifications generated by the system designers.

37

What is the role of remote user?

Anyone who is not physically located on the premises but who still require access to information systems.

38

What is the role of a knowledge worker?

Type of system user whose responsibilities are based on a specialised body of knowledge.

39
