Professional issues
Areas of debate about ethical or practical conduct that underpin good professional practice in a field
Ethics
A branch of philosophy that is concerned with human conduct or more specifically behaviour of individuals in society
Royal charter
A way to formally recognize an organization and define its legal status, governance, and objectives.
It is a formal document signed by the monarch.
Any organisation that believes it’s main objectives are in the public interest can discuss being awarded a royal charter by the Privy Council.
British Computer Society (BCS) charter
A royal charter which establishes and maintains a sound ethical foundation for the use of computers.
Sets a code of conduct (code of ethics) and a set standard of ethics of behaviour members should follow.

- Public interest
- Professional Competence and Integrity
- Duty to Relevant Authority
- Duty to the Profession
Public interest
- Be aware of and comply with aspects of the law and regulations that govern acting in the public interest.
- Conduct professional activities without discrimination.
- Promote equal access to the benefits of IT, inclusion.
Professional Competence and Integrity
- Continuous professional development.
- Being familiar with relevant legislation.
- Undertake project work with professional competence.
Duty to the relevant authority
- Carry out professional duties with due care and diligence accoridng to the relevant authority’s requirements.
- Behaving professionally - handle conflict of interests, confidential information and representation/withholding of information.
Duty to the profession
- Members uphold the reputation and good standing of the BCS and professionalism.
- Support and help develop skills of colleagues.
- Be responsible for and guide the development of those that we are managing.
