-To enable PWII who have deviant or devalued role to move from that status to one that is valued by society

Devalued Roles

-Difference + negative reaction = devalued status
-Devalued people will be treated badly, be rejected, persecuted
-Bad treatment expresses the devalued societal role
-How we are perceived - influences how we behave

2 Major Strategies for Role Valorization

-Enhancement of social image
-Enhancement of competencies

If imaged positively...

-Will likely be provided with experience, expectancies, and life conditions will likely increase person's competencies
-If displaying competencies - will likely be imaged positively

4 Reasons Why Social Roles are Important

1. Roles give a person a "place"
2. Roles that people fill affect various aspects of lives
3. Holding valued roles and others will tolerate other negative roles, characteristics, and behaviours
4. Society extends good things to people in valued roles and bad things to people in "bad" roles

Roles give a person a place

-Define who we are
-Give status
-Roles are strong because people want others to see is in socially recognizable roles

Roles that people fill affect various aspects of our lives

-Relationships will have with others
-Permitted to associate with
-What you will do during the day
-What type of economic status and income
-How much respect from others
-How much you will participate in your community

Holding valued roles and others will tolerate other negative roles, characteristics, and behaviours

-More value the role, the more we put up with negativity

Society extends good things to people in valued roles and bad things to people in "bad" roles

-Clothing allowance, liquor included in expense accounts
-Ok for prisoners to be in jail and poor on street

Physical contexts and environments

-Where people are?
-Hospital = sick
-Environment spare and cold = animal
-Congregate living
-Environment with toys = children
-Dirty environment = ?
-Versus participating with us = equality and value

Social context and associations

-Defined by company you keep
-If always with others with disabilities they belong together, different
-All the same (but different from non disabled)
-Vs. integration, inclusion, and participation

Behaviours and activities

-What are people doing?
-If limited to certain activities
-Working in sheltered/segregated work places
-Always cleaning tables

Language

-Negative language reinforced negative image
-How do we speak about the disabled?

Personal Appearance

-Dress, hygiene, grooming, accessories
-If ill fitting, worn out, dirty, immature - what message?

Miscellaneous Role and Image Communicators

-Lack of funding = message
-Lack of services, waiting lists = message
-Leftover flowers from funerals, "expired" food = message
