Flashcards in Week 2 Deck (26):
What is the process of the reflex arc?
1. stimulus- nocioreceptor sends signal 2. Signal recieved at CNS 3. Processed at CNS 4. Sends a motor response 5. Effector cells respond.
When conducting the Babinski test, what does the follow response indicate? Big toe flexes upwards and other toes fan out?
damage to corticospinal tract. motor response is not responding
What are the 2 divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System?
Sympathetic (fight and flight). Parasympathetic (rest and digest).
What nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord?
What nervous system contains the cranial nerves, spinal nerves and the ganglia?
In the PNS, the nerves that extend from the brain are called?
How many cranial nerves are there?
The olfactory nerve is responsible for what?
The optical nerve is responsible for?
What do mechanoreceptors respond too?
What do thermoreceptors respond too?
What do photoreceptors respond too?
What do chemoreceptors respond too?
chemicals in a solution
what do nociceptors respond too?
What do exteroceptors respond too?
outside the organs
What do interoreceptors respond too?
with in the body
what do propruoceptors?
The somatic nervous system responds to what kind of stimulus? Give an example.
conscious. Thirsty= get a drink
What is the purpose of a knee jerk or patella reflex test?
Motor response of CNS
What are 2 innate human reflexes?
What are 2 acquired human reflexes?
What is the importance of the pupillary light reflex?
ensures photoreceptors are running normally and there is no damage to retinas
describe the patellar reflex..
stimulus is picked up by sensory neuron, taken to interneuron. motor neuron sends to effector and quadraceps contract resulting in foot kicking out
Can a person prevent the reflex occurring?
some individual may exert control but cant prevent.
what is the plantar reflex?
toes curling downwards when sole of foot stroked in downwards motion. it tests the integrity of nerves.
