Week 2 Flashcards
What is a virus?
Viruses are particles made up of nucleic acid, protein and in some cases, lipids that can replicate only by infecting cells
What are the 3 major components of a virus
Tail-Fiber
Capsid (protein shell)
Head
What are the levels of Taxonomy?
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
What are the 6 kingdoms?
Eubacteria Animalia Protista Fungi Planate Archaebacteria
What is Bacteriophage?
Bacteria that are infected by a virus
what is lytic infection?
process in which a virus enters a cell, makes a copy of itself and causes the cell to burst
Define lysogenic infection
the process by which a virus embeds it’s DNA of the host of the cell and is replicated along with the host cell’s DNA
Define Prophage
first and longest phase of mitosis, during which the chromosomes become visible and the centrioles separate and take up positions on the opposite sides of the nucleus
Define Retrovirus
a virus that contains RNA as it’s genetic information
Define Parasitic
Depends entirely upon another living organism for its existence
How do Viruses multiply
they multiple inside living cells
Viruses must be considered to be….
Parasitic
the outer protective coat of a virus is mainly…
Protien
When a phage attacks a cell…
only the DNA enters the cell
which of the following features of a virus would support the idea that they’re non-living
they can be crystallized
