week eleven pt. one Flashcards
(24 cards)
diabetes mellitus
metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia
what is the cause of diabetes mellitus
reduction or absence of production of insulin by beta cells of pancreas or defect of insulin receptors
what are the four types of diabetes mellitus
type one, type two, and gestational
type one diabetes
absolute lack of insulin, pancreatic beta cells are destroyed
type two
body unable to produce sufficient insulin or the body is not able to use the insulin that is produced
gestational diabetes
glucose intolerance with initial onset during pregnancy
macrosomia
baby is more growth then it should be when born
hypoglycemia
low blood sugar
hypocalcemia
low levels of calcium
hyperbilirubinemia
change in skin tone due to too much bilirubin in blood stream
what are the types of diabetes testing
fasting plasma glucose test and oral glucose tolerance test
what level of glucose is considered pre-diabetic for the fasting plasma glucose test
100-125
what level of glucose is considered pre-diabetic for the oral glucose tolerance test
140-199
what are the five systemic complications
diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, macrovascular and microvascular, and oral manifestations
diabetic retinopathy
affects the eye can lead to blindness
diabetic neuropathy
mild to severe forms of nervous system damage and pain in feet and hands
macrovascular/microvascular complications
impairment of blood flow due to thrombi
microangiopathic changes
basement membrane of the capillaries thicken which lead to thrombi
diabetic nephropathy
damages small blood vessels in kidney
what is a normal glucose reading
50-150
three types of diabetic medical emergencies
diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome, hypoglycemia
diabetic ketoacidosis
insufficient insulin levels in blood so body will metabolize fatty acids for energy
hhnks
affects infirm, neglected, or mentally deficient diabetic patients
hypoglycemia
missed meal, alcohol, increased exercise without adjusting insulin dosage
