Edward Jenner (battle against disease)

Invented the first vaccination for smallpox and published it in 1898.

Louis Pasteur (battle against disease)

Published the 'germ theory' in 1861. He found out that bacteria was causing decay, by using the swan necked glass theory. Influenced lister to try carbolic acid.

Robert koch (battle against disease)

Built on the work of Pasteur - found out why anthrax was spreading as well as proving bacteria caused human disease in 1865. Created bacteriology.

Paul ehrlich

Created the first magic bullet 'Salvarsan 606' which killed the bacteria for syphilis. In 1906.

Howard Florey

Helped develop penicillin as a drug, was an expert in the chemical side of producing penicillin and reused patients urine to save as much as possible.

Aneurin bevan

Developed the NHS and braught the health minister round (opposition). NHS started in 1948.

Florence nightingale

Improved cleanliness of hospitals e.g boiling sheets, as well as layout (privacy for amputation). Braught book out 'notes for nursing'. Made training school for nurses and made death rate drop.

Elizabeth Garrett

Trained privately to become a doctor however 1852 med. registration act prevented her from becoming one so held a legal case against the society of apothecaries.

Vesalius (Renaissance)

He suspected bodies against the law and discovered galena theory's were wrong. Wrote a book called the fabric of the human body - proved Galen wrong in over 200 ways.

Blood flows round the body by dissecting

Paracelsus (Renaissance)

Thought diseases attacked from outside the body and disagreed with the 4 humours.
