The central executive is important because
it controls attention and coordinates the actions of the other componants
The CE can briefly store information but has a limited capacity. It is modality free which means
it can process/store information in any sense form.
The CE integrates information from the two slave systems and can also
draw on information from the ltm.
The phonological loop consists of
the articulatory rehearsal system and the phonological store
The articulatory rehearsal system can be known as the inner voice because
it rehearses information verbally like when you repeat info in your head over and over to remember it.
The capacity of the ARS is 2 seconds which can be used to explain the word length effect as
longer words filled up the capacity of the ARS resulting in a decay of words positioned earlier in the list. The longer the word, the more likely it would be forgotton.
The phonological stored can be known as the inner ear because
its uses a sound based code to store information but this info decays after approx 2 seconds unless it is rehearsed by the ARS
The PS receives its input either directly from
the ears or from out LTM, like when you imagine your fave song.
The PS can explain the phonological similarity effect where it is more difficult
to remember similar sounding words and letters compared to words and letters that sound different to one another.
The visuo-spatial sketchpad can be known as the inner eye because
it stores and manipulates visual info since info is input via the eyes or LTM.
The role of the VSSP is to maintain and integrate visual and spatial info from
these different channels using a visual code.
The visual cache is the part that
stores info about form and colour
The inner scribe is the part which deals with
spatial information and movement but also rehearses visuospatial info to be transferred to the CE.
The episodic buffer is the most recent addition and it’s purpose is to
bind all the info together from the other componants of WM with info about time and order e.g chronological
