Q

Forming an X-ray image

A

X-ray beam is focussed onto the specific part of the body
The X-rays pass through the body to impact with a detector
The detector is photographic film inbetween to screens
X-rays cause light to be emitted off the screens
More X-rays get through soft tissue than bone so a shadow of the bone is cast on the paper
The paper is developed as a photographic negative producing an X-ray

Q

Advantages of an X-ray

A

Quick and easy to use, X-ray negatives are developed as the patient waits
Very cheap compared to other imaging methods
Non-invasive no equipment or metals inserted so I pain or discomfort

Q

Disadvantages of X-rays

A

Radiation can cause damage to body cells which can lead to cancer. Risk isn’t high but radiographer stands behind a screen as protection
Produces rather poor quality 2D images can’t image most soft tissue unless contrast medium is used
