a supporting structure in the medial part of the knee

medial sided knee pain
joint effusion
audible pop at time of injury
instability

bimodal ages (young adults and eldelrly)

plain xray of knee
stress xray of knee

epi

very common knee injury
however many minor mcl injuries never reach a physician
adults>children

aetiology

valgus (twisting outwards away from the midline) and or external rotation
commonly by a blow to the lateral knee

what are the mechanisms of mcl injury

contact
non-contact (skiing)
over-use (breast stroke mechanisms)

where is the most common site of mcl injury

femoral insertion site

abduction stress test

positive result is pain and laxity
