Flashcards in Year 9 - Biomes Deck (29):
1

What is a biome?

A community of various plants and animals
Inhabit a particular type of geographic region of earth
Defined by their climate rainfall elevation and plant characteristics

2

Boreal Forest

Only in nothern hemisphere
Long and cold winters
Mostly snow precipitation
Not a lot of rain
Soil poor in nutrients
Growing season is very short
Low sunlight keeps plants from growing on floor
Lots of trees
Mining is a threat

3

Deciduous forest

Much of human population lives here
Leaf bearing trees are a lot
4 distinct seasons
Rich nutrient soils
Precipitation in all forms - 750-1500p/yr
Plants grow in layers
More sunlight reaches the ground
More diversity in plants
Trees adapt to varied climate
Animals loose winter coat and adapt to seasons
Eat from different layers of forest
Forests cleared for housing

4

Savannas

Near tropics equator
Rainy and dry season
Driest month has less than 60mm
1000-1500 mm p/yr
Fire plays large role
Grows in tufts
Resistant to drought
Plants have thorns or sharp leaves to protect themselves
Animals adapt by migrating for short rainy season
Invasive species are a threat

5

Tropical rainforest

Along the equator
Little variation in temperature
No distinct seasonal changes
High biodiversity
Hot and moist
Lots of rain
Sunlight is a major limiting factor
Grows in layers
Poor nutrients in soil
Little sun reaches floor
Camouflage is common
Live in different levels of canopy
Humans strip forests

6

Desert ecosystems

Driest places on earth
Very little rain
Little to no top soil
Minerals not deep in soil
Plants have spines and are thick
Animals get water from food
Thick outer coat
Burrow during day
Residential development is a treat

7

Tundra

North of arctic circle
Little rain
Very cold
Short growing season
Plants grow close to the ground
Shallow roots to absorb limited water
Lots of migration of animals
Few predators
One of the most fragile biomes on earth

8

Polar

Can be considered marine ecosystem as vase of food chain is plankton
Arctic is not a continent
Relatively shallow
Lots of nutrients
Antarctic is a continent
Only continent not used by humans exc research
Reserves of minerals attract people

9

Security

State of being free from danger or threat

10

Nutrients

Providing kilojoules and minerals required for the body

11

Hunger

Sheet term need for food

12

Malnutrition

When body does not get enough vitamins minerals and other nutrients

13

Starvation

State of extreme hunger from lack of food

14

Famine

Extreme shortage of food resulting in death

15

Staple food

Food that is eatin regularly and provides a large proportion

16

Insulation

Amount of solar radiation suns rays that reach the earths surface

17

Photosynthesis

Producers turn suns rays into energy

18

Primary producers

Organisms that can ohotosynthesise

19

Soil

Mixture of air water and broke down rock

20

Industrialism

A social or economic system in which manufacturing industries are widespread

21

Crop yield

Measurements of the amount of a crop that is harvested

22

Food addictive

Substance that is not normally consumed as a food in itself and is not normally an ingredient
Can be there if fulfills technological function in the final food

23

Food security

All people at all times
Have access to sufficient needs and food preferences
Active and healthy lifestyle

24

Ethics

Moral principles that govern persons behaviour

25

Ecological footprint

Impact of a person or community on the environment
Amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources

26

Sustainability

Ability to maintain at a certain rate

27

Gross domestic products

Total value of goods produced and services provided in a country during a year

28

Climate

Weather condition in an area in general or over a long period of time

29

Abiotic

Non living parts of an ecosystem
