What is a shaft?
A
In mechanical engineering, a shaft is a rotating machine element, usually circular in cross section, which is used to transmit power from one part to another, or from a machine which produces power to a machine which absorbs power.

What are some indications of shaft wear?
A
Rust, shiny worn metal, deformations, chips, scratches, dents, or excessive wear

How do you test for for alignment / runout?
A
Using a dial indicator, check for vertical, horizontal, and angular misalignment. A runout gauge can also be used for runout.

What is the best procedure to clean the shaft?
A
Clean the shaft using sand cloth and scotch-brite
