1-21 Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended
Cytoskeleton
Network of fibers that hold the cell together, helps the cell to keep its shape and aids in movement
Cell wall
Rigid structure on the outside of certain cells, usually plant and bacteria cells
Plasma membrane
Semipermeable membrane between the cell contents and either the cell wall or the cells surroundings
Ribosome
Non-membrane-bounded organelles responsible for protein synthesis
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
ER that is dotted with ribosomes; performs protein synthesis
Mitochondria
Organelles in which nutrients are converted to energy
Lysosome
The organelle in animal cells responsible for hydrolysis reactions that break down proteins, polysaccharides, disaccharides and some lipids
Pinocytic vesicle
Vesicle formed at the plasma membrane to allow the absorption of large molecules
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
ER that has no ribosomes; makes lipids and inactivates harmful byproducts
Leucoplast
Organelle that stores starches and oils
Chromoplast
Organelle that contains pigments used in photosynthesis
Central vacuole
Large vacuole that rests at the center of only plant cells and is filled with a solution that contains a high concentration of solutes
Waste vacuole
Vacuoles that contain the waste products of digestion; in both plant and animal cells
Contractile vacuole
Regulates the amount of water in the cell in both plant and animal cells
