1: Introduction I Flashcards
1
Q
What is the central problem of biology?
A
Why are organisms so well adjusted to their environments?
2
Q
What is evolution?
A
Theory by Darwin and Wallace that states that organisms change over time to better adapt to their environment
3
Q
What is natural selection?
A
Differential reproduction of heritable elements because of differential fit with the environment.
4
Q
How long does it take for an organism to adapt to its environment?
A
Depends on:
- Amount of variation in population
- Reproductive differential
- Generation time
5
Q
Entropy
A
- matter and energy both tend to proceed in a natural state of disorder and chaos
- but living things are highly organized
6
Q
Adaptation
A
- the fit between organism and its environment
- NS build adapted organisms by filtering non advantageous traits
7
Q
How does natural selection shape living things? (6 Step Process)
A
- Reproduction is not additive but exponential
- But numbers of organisms tend to stabilize over time
- Therefore must mean that many individuals fail to reproduce
- Individuals with advantageous traits more likely to survive and reproduce
- Offspring resemble their parents
- Advantageous traits become more common over generations
