tissues and organs in plants Flashcards
1
Q
upper epidermis
A
one cell thick, covers leaf like a skin. waxy cuticle.
2
Q
(upper epidermis) waxy cuticle
A
protects leaf against disease. waterproof, prevents water loss by evaporation.
3
Q
palisade mesophyll layer
A
helps light to penetrate into leaf. more chloroplasts than other cells in leaf. chlorophyll in chloroplasts. chloroplasts can move to other regions where light intensity is greatest
4
Q
spongy mesophyll layer
A
gaps allow gas exchange. fewer chloroplasts than is palisade cells as less light intensity
5
Q
lower epidermis
A
(like upper epidermis, but has stomata and guard cells)
6
Q
(lower epidermis) guard cells
A
guard stomata.
7
Q
(lower epidermis –> guard cells) stomata
A
opens and closes 4 gas exchange
