Variety of living things Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are Eukaryotic Organisms?
Cells that contain a nucleus with a distinct membrane they can be multi-cellular or single-celled e.g Plants, Animals, Fungi and protoctists.
What are the features of a plant cell?
Contain Chloroplast
Have Cellulose cell walls
Store carbs as starch or sucrose
What are the features of an Animal?
No chloroplasts (no photosynthesis) Do not have cellulose cell walls Often Store carbs as glycogen Usually have nervous co-ordination Are able to move
What are the features of Fungi?
No photosynthesis
Cell walls made of chitin
Some are single-celled
Made up of hyphae organised into a mycelium
Feed by secreting extracellular digestive enzymes onto the food and absorbing the digested molecules. This is known as saprotrophic
Some are parasitic (feed on living matter)
May store carbs as glycogen
What are the features of Protocists?
Are microscopic single-celled, though some aggregate onto larger forms.
Are usually aquatic
Some have features like animals e.g Amoeba and Plasmodium (the parasite that causes malaria)
Some have features like plant cells, including chloroplast (e.g Chlorella)
What are prokaryotic organisms?
They do not have nucleus and the nuclear material lies in the cytoplasm of the cell
They are much smaller than Eukaryotic cells
Bacteria is a prokaryotic organism
What are the features of bacteria?
Single-celled but have diffrent shapes
Cell structure includes cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm and plasmids
Have no nucleus but contain circular chromosome of DNA feed in diffrent ways
