Effleurage
Long soothing strokes using a flat hand, fingers, or forearm. Used to open the massage, throughout the massage, and to end the massage
Petrissage
Various ways of kneading, rolling, and squeezing the muscle tissue to increase blood and lymph flow. Performed with the fingers and hands to “milk” or “knead” the muscles
Friction
Static or dynamic pressure to a specific area. Can be used to release muscle tension, break up adhesions, and increase blood flow to the tissues.
Tapotement
Fast, stimulating movement also called percussion. Creates vibrations that are used for stimulating week or atrophied muscles, relaxing muscle tensions or spasms, releasing muscle tension, and forming the muscles before activity or stretching
Opening
To warm the muscles and signal the beginning of the massage
Locating
Searching for tension throughout the body
Focus
Working to release tension
Close
To exhilarate or calm. And signals the end of the massage. Effleurage
