Chacteristiscs of a dysfunctional family
- members of the family do not carry out their responsibilities
- needs of family members are not met
- family members display negativity towards each other
- siblings rivalry and conflict
- abuse may happen
Reasons for family dysfunction
- parents perpetuate their own dysfunctional upbringing
- untreated mental illness in one or more family members
- alcohol or drug abused by one or more family members of the family
Impact of dysfunction
Member of dysfunctional family’s have negative self imagine and low self esteem band difficulty guiding friendships and relationships
Parenting styles
Demanding: (supportive/ authoritative): children are accepted for who they are, there is mutual love and respect. Children of teen self controlled confident and high self esteem
(Unsupported/ authoritarian) : parents assert their authority. Children are controlled. Children may have poor social skills and low self esteem
Undemanding ( supportive/ permissive): parents are indulgent. They do not attend to control behaviour. Children may be self confident, impulsive and have difficulty building friendships
(Unsupported/ disengaged/ uninvolved): parents are neglectful and show a lack of interest. There is poor attachment. Children may have low confident and self esteem and hide their emotions
Different types of Bullying
- verbal using words to hurt: name calling, making racist, sexist, islamophobic, disablist comments/ slurs , making threats
- emotional: causing psychological hurt: spreading rumours, ignoring, staking
- physical using force : hitting, slapping, kicking, pushing
- cyber bullying using technology to hurt: sending hurtful comment via internet, sharing personal data without permission
Short effects of bullying
- stress abs anxiety
- poor self imagine
- low self esteem
- eating disorders
