10a – Blood Vessels in the Head Flashcards
What is anatomical knowledge of blood vessels and lymph NODES important for?
-clinical exam
-surgery
-NECROPSY
-MEAT inspection
Arterial sources of blood to head:
-common carotid artery
-vertebral artery
-ventral spinal artery
Common carotid artery:
-main source of blood to head, face and brain
-ascends on each side of TRACHEA (may help reduce T)
-no major branches given off until close to head
Vertebral artery:
-source of blood to brain
-passes thru TRANSVERSE foramina/canal of cervical vertebrae
-forms anastomoses with ventral spinal artery
-enters vertebral canal within atlas
Ventral spinal artery:
-source of blood to brain
-small artery ventral to spinal cord
-receives anastomoses from vertebral artery
-continues into cranial cavity as BASILAR artery
Common carotid artery branches:
-internal carotid a.
-external carotid a.
Internal carotid a.
-to most of brain in most species
-carotid SINUS and body at its base
Carotid body has:
-chemoreceptors
Carotid sinus has:
-baroreceptors
External carotid a. branches:
-occipital
-lingual
-facial
-superficial temporal
-maxillary
Occipital a. goes to:
-middle and inner ear
-meninges
-INDIRECTLY to brain
Lingual a. goes to:
-tongue
Facial a. goes to:
-lips
-lateral nose
Facial a.:
-winds around mandible at vascular notch
-site for taking pulse
Linguofacial a. in horse and ox:
-lingual a. + facial a.
Superficial temporal a. goes to:
-parts of external ear
-masseter
Maxillary a. goes to:
-orbit
-temporalis
-teeth
-nose
-nasal cavity
-palate
