10b – Lymph Vessels in the Head Flashcards
Afferent lymph vessels:
-bring lymph into lymph nodes
Efferent lymph vessels:
-carry FILTERED lymph out
Each lymph node is responsible for:
-draining a certain tributary
Lymph centers:
-groups of NEIGHBORING lymph nodes
Lymph nodes in dog/cat and ruminants are:
-FEWER but larger
Lymph nodes in horse and pig:
-smaller but NUMEROUS
Lymph nodes in horse are:
-LOBULATED
-smaller
-numerous
Lymph nodes in pig:
-INDIVIDUAL lymph nodes are small and numerous
>makes them LOOK fairly large overall
Centre of lymph collection for the head in ox:
-LATERAL retropharyngeal L. node
>located below wing of ATLAS
All lymph passes through:
-at least 1 lymph node
>provides a barrier for infection and cancer cells
What does swelling of a lymph node indicate?
-disease in its TRIBUTARY
-knowing location, normal dimension and tributary of lymph nodes is key for surgeons, pathologists, and meat inspectors
Lymph nodes of head are associated with:
-SALIVARY glands or veins and group into centers
lymph centers of head:
-parotid L. center
-mandibular L. center
-retropharyngeal L. center
Parotid L. center:
-1 or more L nodes at base of ear
-near superficial temporal vein
-partly covered by parotid salivary gland (may be palpable in dog)
Parotid L. centre drains:
-DORSAL half of head and skin
-orbit
-masticatory muscles
