1.1 -1.2 Flashcards
Properties of water?
High specific heat capacity High latent heat of vaporization High density Cohesion and surface tension Good solvent & helps in transport Amphoteric Reactivity
How are charges distributed on a water molecule?
It is unequal. Oxygen is slightly negative and hydrogen is slightly positive.
They are said to be polar.
How is maltose formed?
By two alpha glucose molecules in a condensation reaction
How is sucrose formed?
Alpha glucose and beta fructose molecules combined by a condensation reaction
How is lactose formed?
Glucose and galactose in a condensation reaction
How is triglycerides formed?
Molecule of glycerol condense and combines with 3 fatty acid molecules.
What is good cholesterol and why?
HDL
What is bad cholesterol and why?
LDL
They are saturated
They bind to receptor cells whilst circulating in the blood stream.
This cholesterol maybe deposited in artery walls forming artheromas
Three main types of bonds which can be seen in tertiary structure?
Hydrogen bonds
Ionic bonds
Di sulphide bonds
