all the products that you eat or drink.
Vegetable foodstuffs
food that comes from plants (low-fat margarine, soya milk)
Animal foodstuffs
food that comes from animals (meat, eggs and milk)
Nutrients
substances that your body needs for energy.
Function of fuel
Provide energy for respiration, organs, body temperature, growth, development and repair.
Building blocks
Building blocks for your body to grow and repair wounds.
Reserves
Stocks that are not needed immediately as building materials or fuel. Can be stored.
Protective substances
Make sure that you do not get sick.

Proteins
- Building blocks. (Proteins are needed when cytoplasm is formed).
- Building up muscle.
- Any excess: Fuels, or converted into fats and stored as reserves.
Carbohydrates
(sugars, starch glycogen, glucose)
- Fuel, building materials.
- Any excess: Converted into fats and stored
- Glucose can be converted into glycogen and stored in the liver/muslces.
Fats
- Fuel, building materials, reserves.
- Any excess: Stored as a food reserve (beneath your skin).
Water
- Your body is 60% water.
- Building material, transporting substances.
Minerals
- Salts
- Building blocks, bone growth, protective substances.
- Calcium carbonate, sodium, magnesium, iron.
Vitamins
- Building materials, protection.
- Do not get enough ➝ get ill.
- Important vitamins ABCDK
- A: producing skin and for seeing well
- B: Good brain and nerve functioning.
- C: To form blood vessels, cartilage, muslce.
- D: Building and maintaining healthy bones.
- K: Healthy bones.
