F.5 Bacteria & Humans Flashcards
Mutate
Undergo change in genetic material as a result of an irregularity during replication
Free-living
Bacteria that don’t rely on the presence of a host organism
Normal flora
Microorganisms that live in other organisms (humans, animals, etc) or objects without causing disease
Decomposer
Organism (i.e. soil bacteria) that decomposes organic material
Recombinant DNA
DNA which is constructed out of molecules from more than one species
Biotechnology
Application of technology to biology - enables modern scientists to create hybrid crops, clones of organism, treat genetic disorders, etc
Nitrifying & ammonifying bacteria
Nitrifying bacteria - bacterial species which are able to oxidize ammonium in the soil to nitrates
Ammonifying bacteria - bacteria which convert ammonia into atmospheric nitrogen
