Q

the process of solids getting heated .

A

it is called conduction

When a solid is heated the particles gain kinetic energy and this will cause the particles to vibrate faster and collide more and when the particles collide more and vibrate the neighboring particles will also gain kinetic energy and overtime energy is spread along the metal and heat is spread out evenly and all parts of the solid will most likely be the same temperature .

Q

the process of the process of fluids getting heated

A

it is called convection

and when a fluid is heated the particles gain kinetic energy and starts moving upwards to the cooler region and the cooler particles that have no kinetic energy because it hasn’t been heated moves down to the warmer region and whilst this is happening the particles that are now in the cooler region starts to loose kinetic energy and moves downwards and this cycle keep repeating , and its called the convection current .

Q

state the similarities and differences between convection and conduction .

A

Difference :

  • for conduction only the energy is transferred
  • for convection the particles moves themselves

Similarities :
- Both involves particles gaining kinetic energy

Q

what is the process of heat travelling through a vacuum ?

A

it is called radiation

when heat energy is transferred through a vacuum it is called radiation or more specifically when the energy is carried by infrared waves .

Q

Facts about the relationship between objects and radiation

A
  1. All objects constantly emits and absorbs radiation .
  2. The hotter an object is the more radiation

This is why when you put your hand over a hot barbeque you feel hot its because the coal and very hot metal is emitting radiation and radiation is absorbed by our hands .
