Chap 2 Flashcards
Matter
Any substance that occupies space and has mass
Elements
Unique forms of matter with specific chemical and physical properties that cannot break down into smaller substances by ordinary chemical reactions.
Cations
Positive ions that form by losing electrons
Anions
Negative ions formed by gaining electrons
Electron transfer
Movement of electrons from one element to another
Reactants
Substances used in the beginning of a chemical reaction
Product
Substances at the end of the reaction
Valence shell
Outermost electron shell
Molecules
2 or more atoms chemically bonded together
Isotopes
Different forms of the same element that have the same amount of protons but different number of neutrons. Meaning they are equal in chemical properties but differ in atomic mass.
Radioisotopes
Radioactive isotopes. Unstable chemical element that releases radiation as it breaks down and becomes more stable.
Balanced chemical equation
Each elements number of atoms is the same on each side of the equation
Compounds
Contain atoms of more than one type of element
