12.1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is superposition?
A
when two waves of the same type meet they pass through each other
2
Q
what is meant by the term superpose?
A
when waves overlap
3
Q
what happens when waves superpose?
A
- a single wave is produced
- instantaneous displacement can be found using the principle of superposition of waves.
4
Q
principle of superpostion
A
states that when 2 waves meet at a point the resultant displacement at that point is equal to the sum of the displacements of the individual waves
5
Q
what is interference?
A
- when two progressive waves continuously pass through each other
- they superpose and produce a resultant wave
- with a displacement equal to the sum of displacements from the two waves.
6
Q
Constructive Interferance
A
individual displacements are both in the same direction and add together
7
Q
destructive interference
A
individual displacements are in opposite directions and counteract eachother
