Based on English and International (Metric) System of measurement.

  1. Measuring Tools - linear measuring tools to establish length for distances from 16th of 1” up to 300’. Tapes over 100’ usually subdivide in 10ths of a foot.
    - folding rulers
    - cloth or steel tapes
    - spring lock tapes
    - laser (for rough estimates only)
  2. Testing Tools - used to check workmanship and measurements. Horizontal and Vertical testing tools:
  • Plumb Bob - vertical reference line
  • Torpedo Level - (aka spirit level) used to check horizontal and vertical lines for slope or plumb conditions.
  • Laser- avoid eyes, used to layout correct lines and stacks and establish slope.
  1. Sawing and Cutting Tools- cut wood, plastic or metal. TPI and saw material hardness variations. Saws for plumbers:
  • Keyhold Saw - narrow tapered blade used to cut any shape in wood or Sheetrock.
  • cross cut saw - best all purpose saw for wood. Straight cuts across the grain.
  • Ripping Saw - similar to cross cut saw except for different type of teeth that are used for straight cuts with the wood grain.
  • Back Saw and Miter Box - this pairing is used to make accurate angular cuts so trim pieces will fit properly.
  • Hacksaw - used for cutting metal. TPI is determined by the thickness of the metal to be cut.

Other hand tools for cutting metal or wood:

  • file - used to remove a small amount of material for careful fitting and shaping. Double cut (rougher) or single cut (aka mill cut is smoother) teeth cutting (mill options). Handle is known as the tang.
  • Wood Chisel - 25 degrees bevel used for shaping thin layers of wood.
  • Cold Chisel - double beveled edge with much steeper angle than a wood chisel. Used to cut iron steel or concrete. Sometimes used to force flanges apart. Remove mushroom or slivers of metal around head for safety.
