Lecture 2 Flashcards
Who came up with the Atomic Theory of Matter?
John Dalton
What is the Atomic Theory of Matter?
1) Each element is composed of atoms
2) All atoms of an element are identical.
3)In chemical reactions, the atoms are
not changed not changed.
4) Compounds are formed when atoms of more than one element combine.
particles given off in radioactive uranium
alpha (positive particles), beta (negative charged particles), and gamma rays (not an actual parrtice has a nuetral charge)
What was the Rutheford experiment?
Rutheford took a Helium nucleus with a positive charge and launched it through a gold foil.
Went right through most of the time, curved one way or another other times, and bounced off and went crazy other times.
This was responsible for showing us that most space in an atom is open space. positive nucleus with electrons in an orbit.
