Centre of mass
the point in an object where it’s mass can be thought of as concentrated
Step 1 to find centre of mass of an irregular 2D object
Put a hole through the object from a pin / rod so that it is freely suspended (swings freely)
Step 2 to find the Centre of mass of an irregular 2D object
Hang a plumb line (weighted string) from the pin / rod in front of the object and draw a vertical line along he line of the plumb line on the object
Step 3 to find centre of mass of an irregular 2D object
Repeat steps 1 and 2 using a hole near the edge of the object on a different side. Where the two lines cross is the Centre of Mass
where is the Centre of mass of a symmetrical object>
where the likes of symmetry cross.
suspended equilibrium
The position a hanging object will come to rest in.
This is when it’s Centre of Mass is directly below the point from which it is suspended.
