what is capitalism 4

A

an economic system where things for production are owned and controlled by individuals - they own companies and the labour

Q

how does Birling demonstrate capitalist greed, identify 2 quotes and explain

A

1 in the quote “ … and now you have brought us together and perhaps we can look forward to a time when Crofts and Birlings …. are working together- for lower costs higher prices”.
this show he only views life through business eyes
proposing working together with Crofts suggests he sees Sheila’s marriage as a business opportunity
lower costs higher prices shows how money motivates everything in capitalist society
2 “employers are at last coming together to see that our interests and the interest of capital are properly protected”
Priestly suggests employers chose to protect profits instead of their workers

Q

how does Mr Birling demonstrate the selfish qualities of capitalism

A

1 He repeats “a man has to make his own way he has to look after himself - capitalism discourages people from looking after one another
2 When the inspector told them of Eva’s death his response was “ Don’t tell me thats’ because I discharged her from my employment nearly 2 years ago” He refuses to consider his influence of the lives of others. capitalist employers do not appreciate that their workers depend on them for a decent wage in the same way that they depend on them to do their job.

Q

how is connection shown as a destructive force

A

” what happened afterwards may have driven her to suicide. A chain of events”.
It suggest Birlings were oblivious to how society is joined by a chain and how easy it is for people - especially in the upper classes to ruin the lives of others
metaphor of the chain implies people are linked by more than just property and money. Life is a chain that links everyone

Q

how is Mrs Birling linked to theme of capitalism and socialism

A

She shows how capitalism encourages gatekeeping - limit others access to certain resources.
When justifying why she didn’t give help to Eva she said “ I wasn’t satisfied with the girls claim”. - because she wasn’t satisfied she decided to use her influence to have her claim refused - an example of gatekeeping She used her power to prevent Eva accessing resources available. Shows wealth and support are not equally accessible in capitalist society

to show that capitalism and the class system prevents social mobility

17
Q

How is socialism and capitalism seen through the interactions of Birling and the inspector 4

A

At the start Mr Birling is the most powerful character “heavy looking” - his appearance is dominating.
When he talks he commands the room and leads the conversation - this symbolises the dominance of capitalism in society
When the inspector arrives the power shifts he speaks “carefully” implies he is in control.
As the play goes on Mr Birling loses more power and confidence.
He can not cope with being challenged. We see the inspector interrupting this is symbolic of how socialism is superior
Play opens with Birling’s negative views on socialism referring to them as “cranks” - society is aware of socialism but does not respect it.
