Definition of euthanasia
It is the intentional ending of a life and comes from a Greek term.
Voluntary euthanasia
It has been requested by the person who wants to die
Non voluntary euthanasia
The person who receives a mercy killing has been unable to make the decision for themselves.
Involuntary euthanasia
To ease inevitable suffering a person that would want to live is killed by another person.
Active euthanasia
A direct way of killing the patient has occurred to ensure the patient’s death.
Passive euthanasia
A person who is allowed to die and therefore not directly killed.
Identify potential motives for people who would be willing to assist others in their death
May allow a patient to die without pain.
May allow for a dignified death.
Definition of living will
A written statement detailing a person’s desires regarding future medical treatment in circumstances in which they are no longer able to express informed consent.
Arguments in favour of euthanasia
People who are suffering with illness that cannot be cured, then they should have help in dying.
People should have the right to control their own lives and determine when they will die.
Arguments against euthanasia
Euthanasia would devalue the lives of the disabled or sick.
Christians believe that life is sacred because God has made people in his image.
Doctors may also abuse the system in not reviving elderly people with health problems if euthanasia were legalised.
Palliative care definition
Medical, emotional, psychosocial, or spiritual care given to a person who is terminally ill.
