Peter Lawler
One of the leading intellectual figures of peace studies that initiated the Peace Research Institute of Oslo (PRIO) in 1959. He supported the idea of European scholars promoting peace studies, contrary to conflict studies, and capitalized on the concept of peace to support the more popular field of peace studies at the turn of the 20th century.
Johan Galtung
Some scholars believe that this term refers to the absence of wars while others think of the concept as more than the abandonment of conflicts.
Peace
According to Galtung, it refers primarily to the absence of war and actual physical violence. The absence of war and physical violence enables the society to subsist peacefully and achieve more developments that in the long run will benefit its people.
Negative peace
According to Galtung, it pertains to the existence of a just and an orderly society. The presence of a just and an orderly society speaks about the existence of the condition where e are able to achieve their unique potentials.
Positive peace
According to him, peace studies embraces not only the analysis of large-scale conflicts but also the existence of injustice and inequality in the society. As ide f rom wars , violence occurs as a result of injustice and inequality that spawn opportunities for more human conflicts.
Galtung
He noted that peace studies has provided a valuable site for researchers with backgrounds in political science, economics, psychology, anthropology, education, and sociology- to come together in the study of peace. Most of their research works nowadays are enshrined in a number of peace studies journals that continuously support the study of peace in the international community.
