why is crime good for society - functionalism Flashcards
boundary maintenance
crime produces a reaction from society which reinforces commitment to the shared norms and values. Reinforces social solidarity. This may be done in rituals of the courtroom as they publically shame the offender. This reaffirms the values of law abiding and discourages others from rule breaking
adaptation and change
all change starts with an act of deviance. There should be scope for individuals with new ideas to challenge existing norms and values to bring about change. Society needs to adapt with new ideas and change rather than stagnate. e.g natashas law - allergies
safety valve
crime can release men’s sexual frustrations without threatening the nuclear family. this can be positive and prevent disruptions that are more serious. for example prostitution.
warning light
deviance is an indicator of when an institution is malfunctioning which informs society that a change needs to be made.
