The female reproductive organs Flashcards
The five organs of the FRS
Vagina, uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes
The vagina structure and function
Structure: fibromuscular tube of 8-10 cm long with many transverse folds in the muscular wall. Extends from the external os to the vestibule of the vulva. positioned at a 45 degree angle.
Function: receives the penis and the sperm during sexual intercourse and is a passage way for the menstrual blood flow to leave the body. contains bacteria “commonsals” to destroy pathogens by making it acidic and reducing rsik of infections. the transverse folds allows to stretch during child birth.
Cervix structure and function
structure: lower portion of the uterus. extends from the internal os to the external os, 2-3 cm long tubular shape.
Function: allows passage of menstrual fluid from the uterus, and sperm to the uterus. widens during childbirth and allows passage of baby.
Uterus structure and function
Structure: pear shaped 6-8cm long, found between the bladder and rectum, with empty bladder uterus is at a 45 degree angle anteverted and 90 degree angle with vagina.
Function: Receives, retains the fertilized egg, pus from internal origin accumulate in the pouch of Douglas.
Ligaments
double layers of peritoneum that extends between organs. its a fibrous band that connects one structure to another. Fibrous band that supports an organ or structure
Broad Ligament
Anchors the uterus to the lateral pelvic wall.
Round ligament
Fibrous band of connective tissue which contains blood vessels and verves and attaches the uterus to the external genitalia.
Utero-sacral ligament
attach the uterus to the rectum
Ovarian ligament
attach ovaries to uterus
Fallopian tube Structure
Structure: 10cm long extends from lateral aspect of the uterus to the ovaries, has a small lumen. Divides into: isthmus, ampulla, infundibulum, fimbria.
Ovaries structure and function
Structure: almond shaped glands found lateral to the uterus and anterior to the iliac vessels.
Function: Contains multiple ova housed in follicles. secretes estrogen and progesterone
