Diagnostic Pattern
Heat accumulation in the Stomach.
Herbs
huang lián
shēng má
mŭ dān pí
sheng dì huáng
dāng guī shēn
huang lián
attacks Stomach fire, drains accumulation of heat
heat in middle burner –> pure products of digestion unable to rise, turbid products unable to descend
shēng má
raises, disperses heat and resolves toxicity
for toothache, ulcers, festering sores in the mouth
directs focus of formula to face and mouth
synergy with huang lián: ensures draining of fire does not harm qi dynamic, ascent of yang dose not further fan rising fire
mŭ dān pí
sheng dì huáng
cool the blood, nourish the yin
dāng guī shēn
reduces swelling and alleviates pain by harmonizing the blood
Cautions and Contraindications
Contraindicated in cases with toothache due to wind-cold, or tooth and gum problems due to Kidney deficiency.
