Breathing Flashcards

1
Q

Give the steps for the bell jar demonstration

A

1) Pull the rubber sheet down (the diaphragm)
2) This increases the volume inside the bell jar and decreases the pressure inside
3) The drop in pressure causes air to into the balloons (inhaling)
4) let go of the rubber sheet - relaxing your diaphragm
5) Volume in the jar gets smaller - pressure increase so air rushes out

Q

What happens when you breath in?

A

The diaphragm moves down, and the ribs move up - increases volume of chest cavity so the pressure decreases, and air is rushed in to fill the lungs
