A

It was the first written agreement for self-government in America. Its intention was to protect the Pilgrims and their right to worship God in the manner they felt was best. The Pilgrims selected their own governor, John Carver, and showed that people who are in subjection to God and able to control their own selfish desires are capable of self-government.
