Q

What is the “FAST Method” for Reading?

A

The “F” stands for “forget” - what old reading habits will you forget? Focus is also an important fundamental (think about mindfulness meditation)
The “A” stands for “active” - What motivates you to read? What will you do with your newfound extra time?
The “S” stands for “state” - What state do you usually find yourself in when reading? How can you improve this? If you enjoy reading, then you will do it more.
The “T” stands for “teach” - How will you teach this to someone else?

Q

How do you measure your progress?

A

There is both efficiency and comprehension in terms of working on this. In terms of efficiency, we were taught to use words per minute (WPM). In order to calculate WPM, measure how many lines in per minute. Then take average of words in three lines. Then, lines per minute x average number of words per line.

Q

At day 2, what was WPM?

A

My starting speed was 538.33 WPM. By Day 3, I was 665.175 WMP and 623 WPM. I would like to get to 1,000 WPM by the end of the class. Of course, this depends on what type of book reading and this is with “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying.”

Q

What is “indentation reading”?

A

It is when you use a visual pacer but you start approximately 1 inch into sentence and end approximately 1 inch from end of brief. It is using peripheral vision to capture more words at end. At Day 5, it was crazy! I did two minute test for wpm and it was 1,051.61 words per minute! I felt like I was not necessarily the highest comprehension (i.e., things feel like slowing down even though going fast) but still amazed.

Q

What is “infinity technique”?

A

It is an exercise for your eyes that also helps the two “sides” of the brain to communicate. Trace infinity sign slowly and have eyes move to follow it but do not move head. Do this as warm-up before reading.

Q

Why do I want to read a book a week?

A

Because if I make out 20 minutes each day (with ability to type of notes after reading chapter), it would be great way to sharpen the sword…also think of mental math

Q

What is Jim’s technique to reduce or break habit of subvocalization?

A

The 123 Technique. When you are reading, count 1, 2, 3 over and over again so your “inner voice” does not read the words.

Q

What is the 4-3-2-1 Speed Drill?

A

You read at your current wpm for four minutes. Then, you read the same “track” that you did in four minutes, but you do it in three minutes. Then, you read the same “track” in two minutes. Then, you read the same “track” in one minute. Then retest your wpm.
