- The Golden Horseshoe is a densely populated and industrialized region centred around Lake Onatario in Canada
- With a population of 8.1 million people, it makes up slightly over a quarter of the population of Canada

They have a number of functions:
- the removal of pressure on major conurbations such as London
- to encourage people to settle in more remote parts of a country eg. Brasilia
- New towns include modern housing and a planned layout
