- counts for up to 50% all mental patients
- Affects thought processes and ability to determine reality

What is type 1 schizophrenia?
A
- Acute
-Positive symptoms - Responsive to medication
-Greater recovery prospects

What is type 2 schizophrenia?
A
- Chronic
-Negative symptoms
-Non responsive to medicine - Poorer recovery prospects

What are the requirements to be diagnosed with schizophrenia?
A
- Must have 2 or more symptoms
- Must have had these for more than 1 month
- Show evidence of reduced social functioning

What’s chronic onset schizophrenia?
A
- Sufferers become increasingly disturbed through gradual withdrawal and motivational loss over a prolonged period

What’s acute onset schizophrenia?
A
- Symptoms appear suddenly, after a stressful incident

When does schizophrenia commonly occur?
A
- Between ages 14-45
- Equal incidence rate between men and women but males show onset at an earlier age

What are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
A
- AUDITORY HALLUCINATIONS, include voices that are often insulting, simultaneous delusions
- PRIMARY DELUSIONS, delusions of grandeur and delusions of persecution
- PASSIVITY EXPERIENCES AND THOUGHT DISORDERS, believe thoughts and actions are under external control eg by aliens

What are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
A
- THOUGHT PROCESS DISORDERS, they wander off point, create new words——->
SPEECH POVERTY, excessively brief replies to questions, minimal elaboration - AVOLITION, inability to make decisions, no enthusiasm or energy, no personal hygiene
- DISTURBANCES OF EFFECT, appear uncaring, innapropriate emotional responses
- PSYCHOMOTOR DISTURBANCE, ticks, twitches,repetitive behaviours
