• In pre-historic times (pre-writing), systems of agriculture, pottery, and eventually bronze production developed across East Asia
• These were not simultaneous – China preceded Korea which preceded Japan in most of these developments (with possible exception of pottery)
• Associated with the spread of agriculture was the growth of states, which expanded due to their abilities to organize people for warfare
