What are the TWO behavioural characteristics of phobias?
A
BOTH ACTIONS INVOLVE FIGHT OR FLIGHT.
- AVOIDANCE: this is when a person is presented with their phobia and their immediate response is to avoid it.
- PANIC: this involves running away or freezing.

What are emotional characteristics of phobias?
A
FEAR&ANXIETY: involve high levels of arousal (feeling very alert) , desire to retreat.
#EXCESSIVE & UNREASONABLE.

What are the Cognitive Characteristics of phobias?
A
SELECTIVE ATTENTION: if a person is presented with an object they fear, they will find it hard to direct their attention elsewhere. Fixation on the phobia.
IRRATIONAL BELIEFS: a persons phobia may seem a lot more irrational to them than others. ( e.g. someone may believe spiders are deadly and dangerous = someone with arachnophobia )
