Lecture 5: Scale Flashcards
Scale drawing
A drawing that shows a real object with accurate sizes reduced or enlarged by a certain amount.
Scale factor
How many times the real object is, compared to the drawing.
Metric scale notation
1/N
(1 = paper size, N = actual size)
Scale ruler
Tool to interpret size with labels that already reflect the scale
Engineer’s scale notation
1” = N
Based on US customary units and 6 systems (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60)
Inch symbol
”
Foot symbol
’
Engineer’s scale example
1”=1”
1”=10’
1”=100’
1”=100yd
Engineer’s scale ruler
6 division labels (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60) that represent the number of divisions in an inch of the scale ruler.
How to use an engineer’s scale ruler
- Identify the correct scale label and corresponding marks.
- Divide the length of the actual size object by the scale label.
- Draw the corresponding object’s length with the resulting number of division marks.
Architect’s Scale notation
N/M” = 1’ - 0”
(Left = size on paper, right = actual size) Based on US customary units and uses fractions.
How to use an architect’s scale ruler
- Choose an appropriate scale ruler
- Line up “0” mark with the object & read the “rounded-down” number
- Line up the rounded-down number with the other end of the object & measure the fractional feet
