What is autocratic leadership?

A

Where the managers make decisions with little or no input from the employees. Management dictates work ,ethics and processes. Managers can quickly establish rules and policies that must be followed by the employees.

What are the pros and cons of an autocratic leadership?

A

+ clear chain of command
+ works well in environments where clear direct leadership is needed
+ allows for quick decision making
+ useful in stressful or life-or-death situations (public services)
- can have negative motivation on employee motivation
- ignores creative solutions that employees might have
- relies heavily on the competency of the leader
- creates a culture of dependency on managers/leaders

A

Democratic leaders allow employees to help in the decision making process. Employees have a higher degree of participation in the business and are allowed to collaborate on the decision making process.

What are the pros and cons of a democratic leadership?

A

+ employees are motivated so they feel valued and listened to (Mayo)
+ allows and encourages employees to grow and develop into their roles
+ suitable in situations where employees are highly skilled
+ business benefits from employees ideas
- decision making may take longer as employees need to be consulted
- depends on the skills and knowledge of the employees
- staff may have their own agenda or be unreliable
