Adaptations Flashcards
What is an adaptation?
An inherited feature that helps and organism to survive long enough to reproduce in its changing environment
List 3 types of adaptions:
- Structural
- Behavioural
- Physiological
What is a structural adaptation?
Actuals body parts that help an organism survive in their environment
Give examples of structural adaptation
- Flippers to swim
- Wings to fly
- Bent legs to run & jump
What is behavioural adaptations?
The way an organism acts to help them survive in their environment
Give examples of behavioural adaptations
- Migration
- Hibernation
- Hunting in packs
What is physiological adaptations?
The ways in which an organisms body functions to increase its survival chances.
Give examples of physiological adaptations
- Storing water and fat in a camels hump
- Chameleon changing colours when scared
How does adaptation develop in a species?
Adaptations are the result of evolution. Evolution is a change in a species over long periods of time. Adaptations usually occur because a gene mutates or changes by accident!
Why do animals migrate?
to help find a less harsh climate, find food and possible reproduce
Why do animals hibernate?
when an animal becomes inactive and all body processes slow down in order to help survive the cold weather when there is less food available to survive.
