ASA I
Normal, healthy patient
Which stage of ASA?
Healthy, non-smoking, no / minimal alcohol use
ASA I
ASA II
Patient with mild systemic disease
Which stage of ASA?
Mild disease only without substantive functional changes. (Smoker, social alcohol drinker, pregnancy, obesity, well-controlled DM/HTN, mild lung disease)
ASA II
ASA III
Patient with severe systemic disease
Which stage of ASA?
Substantive functional changes with one or more moderate-to-severe diseases (poorly controlled DM/HTN, COPD, morbid obesity, active hepatitis, alcohol dependence, implanted pacemaker, moderate reduction of cardiac ejection fraction)
ASA III
ASA IV
Patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life
Which stage of ASA?
Recent (<3 mo) MI, CVA, TIA, ongoing cardiac ischemia or severe valve dysfunction, sepsis, ESRD w/o dialysis)
ASA IV
ASA V
Moribund patient who is not expected to survive without the operation
Which stage of ASA?
Patient with ruptured abdominal / thoracic aneurysm, massive trauma, intracranial bleed with mass effect, ischemic bowel with significant cardiac pathology
ASA V
ASA VI
Patient who has been declared brain dead whose organs are being removed for donor purposes
