Nursing Theory Flashcards
Define praxis*
Idea that practice influences theory while at the same time there influences practice
Define concepts*
An idea that represents some aspect of our experiences and our world (such as pain, hunger, shortness of breath, love, grief, etc.)
How do nurses use concepts?*
Nurses use concepts to understand and/or describe situations and circumstances
What are the difficulties associated with concepts?*
Not universally understood in the same way; influenced by context
Define theories*
A theory consists of several concepts used to describe, explain, or predict a particular phenomenon
- Weaves together a variety of concepts in a unique way to describe their relationships
A model is a visual representation of a ____*
Theory
Describe the grand nursing theory and provide examples*
Highly abstract; frame disciplinary knowledge in ways that are not specific to one particular practice area
Examples - Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Peplau’s Theory
Describe midrange/middle-range theory and provide examples*
Narrower in scope; serve as a bridge between grand theories and practice theories; emerge at the intersection of research and practice
Examples - Health promotion model
What nursing theory acts as a bridge for the other two theories?*
The midrange/middle-range theory
Describe the nursing practice theory and provide examples*
Used for a particular nursing care situation; provide a framework for nursing interventions and activities
Example - Pain management approach, gate control theory
Define a metaparadigm*
A global framework or way that a professional discipline views the world
What are the four key components of the nursing metaparadigm?*
- Nursing
- Health
- Environment
- Person
Define the concept of person*
Any recipient of care (sick or well)
The person can be an individual, family, community, or population
Persons are considered holistically (physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, values, beliefs)
Define the concept of health & what is its goal?*
The intended outcome of nursing care
Determined by each person or community
Goal is to maximize one’s potential - not merely the absence of disease
Define the concept of environment*
Anywhere that nursing is carried out - as well as anything that affects a person and includes both the external and internal contexts (i.e., disease, cultural, developmental, poverty, education, religion)
