What is the difference between rights and obligations?*
Rights - a claim or privilege to which one is justly entitled, either legally or morally
Obligations - A corresponding duty which is carried by another; anything a person must do or refrain from doing to permit full exercise of the rights of another

What is the right to respect and dignity?*
Treat others as persons worthy of respect, address persons by their preferred name or title, introduce by name, talk to them even if unconscious, and understand there is more to the client than their diagnosis
What is the right to informed consent?*
Based on the principle of autonomy - giving the patient the right/authority to make their own decisions and providing them with all necessary information
What is the right of access to health information and teaching?*
Nurses have obligation to provide patients with knowledge and skills to care for themselves after discharge
Clients should be aware of how to access further information or help as needed
What is the right to confidentiality?*
An obligation to maintain confidentiality through verbal, written, electronic, and all other forms of information
What is a circle of care?*
Providing information about patient care and treatment only on a need to know basis and to those assigned to provide care/within the circle of care
What is statutory duty to disclose?*
Right to confidentiality may conflict with the obligation to provide care and prevent harm - only applies when the obligation to disclose is clear
What four cases are HCP required to disclose?*
- Certain communicable or sexually transmitted diseases
- Suspected child, elder, etc. abuse
- Gunshot wounds
- Intent to harm or kill another person
What is the right to privacy?*
Nurses are obliged to ensure patient privacy during bathing, examinations, or procedures; pictures are not taken without permission; privacy is respected with regards to consults with religious leaders, counsellors, or social workers
What two rights go hand in hand with one another?*
The right to privacy goes hand in hand with the right to confidentiality
What is HIA and a custodian?*
Health Information Act - governs the collection, use, and disclosure of health information by custodians
Custodians includes regional authorities, pharmacies, clinics, and other health service providers
What is the right to discharge?*
Patients cannot be held - they have the right to leave, even if against medical advice (AMA)
What are six strategies to working with transgender patients?*
- Recognize their unique needs related to privacy, access to washroom facilities, room assignments, etc.
- Refrain from making assumptions about their needs, and listen to them
- Ask about their preferred names or pronouns and mirror their language when referring to themselves, their partners and their bodies
- Treatments are often not covered through Medicare
- Take time to learn from them
- Be person-centered
What is the right to safe care?*
Nurses are obligated to disclose errors with the patient and reporting of incidents/errors
